Window Film News
Johannesburg South Africa May 2011

When safety film first appeared on the market in 1970 it was designed to hold glass together under a bomb explosion. These explosions were being experienced in England as the IRA resistance movement were targeting cities throughout the UK.

A 50 micron safety film was the product used at that time. Klingshield started operating in South Africa and realised that they needed a thicker film as the potential of rioting and stone throwing attacks were becoming a reality due to the political upheaval at that time and these thicker films offered twice the impact resistance.

Klingshield requested window film manufacturers to manufacture thicker films and a 100 micron clear safety film because of the type of attacks that were taking place.

These thicker films were also manufactured by the lamination of a 35 density tinted film to enable us to offer a solar safety smash and grab window film. This combination film made a lot of sense as Klingshield could now offer an impact resistant film as well as a heat reduction, glare reduction and fade reduction product.

Today Klingshield also market a high performance smash and grab window film in a 35 density, which is far better in total solar energy rejection than the old style tinted window films. The old style window films are still used today by all tinting companies, as they have a tinted look to them which are popular with the consumer as they enjoy the look of the product.

New technology high performance 100 micron safety films known as “new technology” window film exclusive to Klingshield, is a much better product than the old style as the total solar energy rejected is far greater and keeps the interior of motor cars a lot cooler than the old style tinted films.

Slowly more and more drivers are starting to appreciate the difference in performance and are now going for our high performance smash and grab window films due to the “green” thinking and lower carbon emission emitted by these high performance films.

Why would anybody want to utilise old technology when this new technology is available. New technology smash and grab window film has a slight reflective look and offers greater privacy from inquisitive eyes peering into the car. Drivers feel more comfortable and more secure when they cannot be seen clearly from the outside in.

Another benefit of new technology smash and grab window films, is that they allow more light through to the inside of the car compared to the old technology.
