Estimating Savings of Airconditioning costs with Solar Film

Save on Air-conditioning costs with Solar Film

Worldwide companies have been and still are applying sun control window film to all glass areas in huge buildings.

Building managers and owners have experienced the reduction in airconditioning costs due to the application of sun control window film.

When the sun shines through a window consumers switch on airconditioning units to pump that hot heat back out of a room. It makes sense to rather stop the heat coming in in the first place by applying a reflective film to the glazing material, turning the ordinary glass into a high performance solar and safety glass. Once the film has been applied your glazing material starts working for you by reflecting the solar energy from passing through the glass.

Certain information is required to estimate airconditioning savings with the application of solar film to windows. Many questions need to be addressed and answered to accurately estimate the amount of savings in electricity from airconditioning units. Under normal circumstances, engineers and building managers should have the answers to the following questions.

  • The general type of construction on each side of the building i.e. 50% glass 50% brick.
  • The type of glass in the building. i.e. 4mm clear, 6mm shatterproof, slightly tinted.
  • The type of heating or airconditioning system installed in the building at the present time. E.g. is it watercooled or aircooled tower. Model number, type and size of airconditioning unit.
  • Total capacity of airconditioning unit in kilowatts per ton per hour.
  • How many airconditioning units on each side of the building and the capacity of each airconditioner.
  • What is the cost of airconditioning power. E.g. per cent per kilowatt.
  • Is the building heated in winter and what are the costs of electricity bills in winter compared to summer.
  • The total number of days airconditioning units working per year and the total number of days the heating units are working per year.
  • How much Langley of radiation hits the window and this information is available from the local weather bureau.
  • The daily routine of airconditioning e.g. shut off on weekends or nights.
  • The square metres of glass on each side of the building and the direction the building is facing.
  • Customer’s name and address.

In conclusion, if we have the above information certain estimates can be made on how much savings will be forthcoming due to the application of sun control film. Under normal circumstances the savings can amount to a payback period of three to five years. In other words, the savings over three to five years should pay for the installation of the sun control window film to all glazing areas facing the exterior within a building. This saving pays for the film and thereafter building owners will have more money in their cashflow as they would have paid for the installation of the film and would then have a saving thereafter.

Besides the saving of energy one also gets the benefit of glare reduction and ultra violet reduction. All solar films stop 99% of the ultra violet rays which is the main cause of fading in offices and homes, to interior furnishings. The film also holds the glass together should the window be broken or shattered for any reason.

The bottom line is that sun control window film is an investment for any property owner and should you require to get an estimate of the savings please contact us.
